Bloom's Traditional Jewish Cuisine

Bloom’s Kosher Catering & Carry –Out has been serving the Jewish Community of Detroit for the past 55 years. The reason for Bloom’s fine reputation and success is the use of the highest quality and freshest kosher products in the preparation. Blooms Jewish Cuisine is made from scratch in her own kitchen. Shirlee Bloom has modified some of her old world traditional recipes to cater to those who want baked-fat free and Low Carb foods. We also have many vegetarian dishes.
You don’t have to be kosher or even Jewish to enjoy and appreciate the quality and cleanliness of kosher meat & poultry. Once you try it, it is doubtful you will want to feed your family or company anything but this delicious and healthy food. Shirlee Bloom has really mastered the art of fabulous foods. She inspires the taste of wholesome old world flavor of natural foods.

 The Bloom’s Story

Harry and Lil Bloom would drive down Dexter Ave. in the 40’s and pass Lachers Kosher Catering and my Dad would say “That’s the business I would like, where people come to my establishment dressed in their best clothes, dancing, and eating and having such a good time”. Because of a kosher law you could not be in a Kosher and non-kosher business at the same time, so they gave up the food concession at Detroit Steel Products and opened up Bloom’s Mayfair Kosher Catering to become the top Kosher Caterer in Detroit. His dream came true.

They did catering in their own hall at the Mayfair at Dexter Davison plus catered at all other Synagogues. Fourteen years later they relocated the Mayfair to 7 mile and Schafer and 12 years later to 10 mile and Greenfield.  When Harry passed away, Lil opened up at 10 Mile and Coolidge in Oak Park to be Lil’s kosher Catering and Carry-Out and also exclusively at Bnai David Synagogue, plus catering House and Hall parties.
Harvey and Shirlee joined their parents in their catering business. He taught them about the food business and told us “When in doubt throw it out” Also, “Never serve anything to a customer that you would not serve your own family” Every customer became a friend. My brother and I always tried to follow his philosophies.  Harvey then went out on his own to become exclusive caterer at Beth Acheim and later at Bnai David, also a Carry- out at 9 mile and Coolidge. Harvey since moved to Florida still in the food business. Lil and Shirlee continued together in business until Lil passed away in 1976. Shirlee and her husband Tony continued at the carry- out store in Oak Park, also carry- out in Harvard Row Meat Market and catering at Beth Sholom. Shirlee’s daughter Cookie ran the carry- out counter at Harvard Row.


After Tony passed away in 1989, a mutual friend Dr. Sam Scheinfield suggested that Ron Asmar and Shirlee Bloom would make a fine combination. She and Ron (of Vineyards catering) got together and it was the beginning of a fine business marriage. Since her arrival Vineyards has become a full pledged café with booths, more counters of fresh foods and more versatile menus for parties and dining-in. Shirlee has her own separate kitchen where all foods prepared by Shirlee are from only kosher products. She has a complete line of Entrees, Side dishes, Soups, Salads, Vegetarian and complete dinners and Deli trays.  Home made desserts and Fruit trays are also available.
Shirlee’s daughter Cookie is in charge of all outside parties and staff. Shirlee has carried out the Bloom name and reputation with dignified pride.
